by: Lee A. Chan
As the tradition for the last 13 years in Mandaluyong, this August will be full of activities and launching of projects that will definitely benefit the cityys constituency as Cong. Neptali M. Gonzales II celebrates his birthday on August 29. There will be barangay and citywide infrastructure projects to be inaugurated and blessed, while groundbreaking of more projects will also commence. The weeklong activities will start off on August 24, Sunday, with a Bicycle Race from 6-11:30am at the Maysilo Circle and Open Canal (San Francisco St). Despite Monday (August 25) being a holiday, Mandaluyong will break ground for two (2) projects in Addition Hills: the Blocks 12 and 38 Covered Courts. On Tuesday, a local and overseas Job Fair led by the Public Employment Service Office will be held at the City gymnasium. To start at 9am until the afternoon, it will offer hundreds of job vacancies here and abroad to interested and qualified constituents. Simultaneous with the job fair are the inaugurations and blessings of two (2) completed social infrastructure projects in Addition Hills and Highway Hills. A new Outpost and Fire Sub-Station will be inaugurated in Block 39-40 of Addition Hills, finally providing tangible assurance to the community against fire incidences. It will also serve as a community outpost of the Bantay Bayan who maintains peace and order in the area especially at night. In Highway Hills, the new Highway Hills Integrated School secondary building will also be inaugurated. The new building for high school consists of 4-storey, 36-classrooms. On Wednesday, August 27, hundreds of day care students from the cityys 24 day care centers will get together for a day of fun and games at the City gymnasium. They will be treated to good food, games and childrenns presentations sponsored by Gonzales. On Thursday, August 28, three (3) social infrastructure projects in three (3) different barangays will finally commence. Groundbreaking rites for the construction of additional classrooms for the Barangka Ilaya and Dooa Pilar Gonzaga Elementary School are scheduled to be lead by Gonzales at 9:00am and 10:30am at barangaya Barangka Ilaya and Hagdan Bato Libis, respectively. In the afternoon, groundbreaking of the Harapin ang Bukas Barangay and Multi-Purpose Hall is slated at 3:30pm. On August 29, the birth anniversary of Gonzales, the day will start with the traditional Maaanita at the Kaban ng Hiyas Building at 5am. It will be followed at 8am by the regular Lugawan at the 29 de Agosto where Gonzales together with his constituents and friends will share yummy rice porridge. This activity is among the highlights of the celebration as local residents get in line to have lugaw for breakfast for free at 29 de Agosto. Started in 1995, this tradition is in recognition of the roots of the Gonzales family as lugaw vendors of Mandaluyong. For the youth and the young at heart, a free back-to-back concert by the Kamikazee and the Parokya ni Edgar will be held at the RTU quadrangle at 7pm. This is the 14th year that Gonzales will offer this concert to the youth of the city for their involvement in community action and development. On Saturday, Gonzales is set to distribute rice for free to indigent constituents. More than 5,000 poor residents from the cityys barangays will benefit from this project. He said this is his small gift to his people at this time of economic difficulty and food crisis. On Sunday, August 31, the much-awaited Bingo Bonanza for the Green Ladies Movement, the women civic arm of Gonzales, will be held at the city gymnasium to give these women a day of fun and relaxation. Great prizes like home appliance showcases await the winners. Also slated for turning over within the weeklong celebration are the PhP17 million worth of school equipment to all city schools and the PhP40 million worth of addition supply and equipment subsidy to the Mandaluyong City Medical Center.
