New school building, barangay fire station rise in Mandaluyong  - 8/25/2008
by: Lee A. Chan
Barangays Addition Hills and Highway Hills in Mandaluyong City will welcome on Tuesday (August 26) the inauguration and blessings of significant barangay projects that will certainly answer their communityys need for additional social infrastructures. Addition Hills will formally open the newly constructed 2-storey barangay outpost/Multi-Purpose Hall and mini-fire station in Blocks 39-40 that will serve as the areaas center for peace and order and fire protection. This is part of Cong. Neptali M. Gonzaless continued effort to rehabilitate these two Blocks in the Welfareville Compound, site of the April 2007 fire that razed the entire area. These two projects, funded through the efforts of Gonzales, cost PhP2.3 million and was completed in a span of three months. It can be recalled that on the same site in April this year, Gonzales constructed a 2-storey Day Care Centers catering to Blocks 39 and 40, and as replacement for the one gutted down by the fire in April 2007. High school students of Highway Hills Integrated School, on the other hand, have more reason to celebrate as their building is formally inaugurated and blessed following the rites at Addition Hills. This is a 4-storey, 36-classrooms building costing PhP72.2 million that was actually started during the last year of incumbency of Cong. Gonzales as Mayor of Mandaluyong in 2006. Through House Bill No. 3716 that he authored in Congress last year, the conversion of the school from a mere elementary school into an integrated school is now for approval in the Senate. Gonzales is confident the conversion of the school will be final soon. Currently, the secondary school of Highway Hills has been on operation since last year. The first batch of enrollees, now on their second year, has four sections, while the freshmen this year consist of seven sections. The school is among the three elementary schools in Mandaluyong that Gonzales worked on to be converted to integrated schools to answer the problem of congestion and overpopulation of the few public high schools in the city. Education support is foremost in Gonzaless agenda for the development of Mandaluyong. (30)
